When was Sheffield Wednesday founded?
Sheffield Wednesday were originally founded in 1867. They were originally called ‘The Wednesday’ and were formed by members of the local cricket team. The Wednesday changed their name to The Wednesday Football Club and then to Sheffield Wednesday in 1929.
Why is Sheffield Wednesday called that?
The name ‘Wednesday’ originates from the fact that the founding members of the club enjoyed a half day off work on Wednesdays. This allowed them to play sport, so they adopted this into the club name. The name Sheffield was added in 1929 to reflect their location in the city.
Why are Sheffield Wednesday called the Owls?
